My dad doesn’t have syphilis. Even if he did, we wouldn’t know about it. Dad left Mom for parts unknown about four years ago. After he left, I dropped out of the police academy because we couldn’t afford the tuition. I held several jobs (selling rodeo tickets, holding a sign outside a fast-food place dressed as a chicken, and dancing in a cage at a nightclub) before landing this gig at B.M.

I live in my mother’s garden apartment in the Hamline-Midway neighborhood to help pay the mortgage. As Dad used to say about Mom’s cooking, my apartment is not too bad, but not too good, either. I’ve tried to make it homey with shade-loving plants and brightly colored cushions from Target, but I’m not fooling anyone. This is a subterranean dwelling, the kind only a creature of the night would dig.
